You are awake through the whole procedure, but with your eye numbed
by drops.
See the Flash
animation.
The procedure :
- Special devices hold your eyelid open and steady your
eye during this procedure.
|
- With the microkeratome, the doctor lifts away a small
section of the front of the cornea, or corneal flap, and
folds it back. You may feel some pressure in your eye.
|
- Then you're asked to look at a light to center your eye
under the laser, and the doctor removes microscopic layers
of the cornea, a process that typically takes less than
one minute.
|
- Last, the flap is put back in place : it will heal without
stitches.
